A mass gainer is for anyone trying to get into a caloric surplus who cannot get there easily through food alone. A caloric surplus is an intake that sits above your maintenance calories, in other words the number of calories at which your bodyweight stays stable.
Why chase that surplus? Because it is the precondition for a bulk, whose aim is to increase lean mass, in other words muscle. The surplus does two distinct jobs. First, it lets you train at high intensities session after session without fatigue building up to the point where it degrades the quality of your work. Second, it gives the body the energy it needs to recover and to synthesise new protein (Aragon et al., 2017; Slater et al., 2019).
In practice, a mass gainer becomes relevant if you have a naturally small appetite, if your schedule makes eating 5 to 6 full meals a day difficult, if you see a persistent gap between what you actually eat and your calorie target, or if you train very hard. Some people reach that surplus less easily than others, because of individual differences in metabolism and appetite.

How to Calculate Your Caloric Surplus for Muscle Gain
This is the crux: without a caloric surplus, no mass gainer will help you. What remains is working out how big that surplus should be.
A surplus should not be thought of as an absolute number, but as a percentage of your maintenance calories. Requirements vary widely from one person to the next: an extra 300 kcal is not the same relative jump for someone eating 2,000 kcal a day as for someone eating 4,000. The first step is therefore to estimate your maintenance, meaning the intake at which your bodyweight stays stable. Two approaches exist, and they complement each other.
1. By calculation. Estimate your basal metabolic rate with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, then multiply the result by your activity factor (sedentary x1.2; lightly active x1.55; very active x1.73). That gives you a starting estimate, useful to get going, but it remains a statistical average rather than your personal value.
2. Empirically. Hold your intake constant for two to three weeks, weighing yourself several times a week under the same conditions, then compare the weekly averages. The intake that leaves your bodyweight stable is your real maintenance. This method is slower, but far more reliable than any equation, because it accounts for your spontaneous activity and your digestion.
On that basis, a surplus in the region of 10 to 20% of maintenance is a sensible starting point for a bulk. It seems wise to start at the bottom of that range, around 10%, then adjust according to how your bodyweight moves over three to four weeks: a bigger surplus mainly accelerates fat gain (Slater et al., 2019). Mistakes to Avoid with a Mass Gainer

4. Neglecting training quality. The caloric surplus and the protein make progress possible, but it is the session that triggers it.
