QNT Pre-Workout: fuel your energy before you train

What is a pre-workout (a pre-training booster)?

A pre-workout, also known as a pre-training booster, is a supplement you take a few minutes before your session so you can start your effort with more energy and focus. Most formulas combine several active ingredients: caffeine (or guarana) for alertness, nitric oxide precursors such as citrulline or arginine (AAKG) for the muscle pump, and beta-alanine to push back that burning sensation.

At QNT, the pre-workout collection covers every format and every profile:

  • Powders to measure out: Pre Workout Pump RX (caffeine-free), Metapure Pre-Workout (Overdrive)
  • Ready-to-drink shots: Kick Pre Workout, Guarana Kick 2000, Guarana Extreme Voltage, Elite N.0.+
  • Energy gel: Energel Quick Boost
  • Arginine on its own: AAKG 100

Whether you want a serious kick before a heavy strength session or gentler support for endurance work, you will find the formula that fits your training here.

What is a pre-workout for, and who is it for?

A pre-workout is there to stack the odds in your favour before you train. In practice, you are after three things: more energy so you do not start your session flat, more focus to stay locked in on your sets, and a better pump (the blood flow into the muscle) when you lift.

A pre-workout suits every kind of athlete:

  • Beginners who sometimes lack the motivation to get to the gym
  • Experienced lifters who want support on the big lifts (squat, bench, deadlift)
  • Endurance and combat sports: a shot or gel format gives you a handy, practical boost
  • Women and men alike: the active ingredients work the same way, you just adjust the dose

A pre-workout is no substitute for sleep, solid nutrition or training itself. It is an occasional helping hand, best used when you genuinely need it rather than at every single session.

Pre-workout with or without caffeine: which one to choose?

This is THE question that comes up most. The right choice depends mainly on how sensitive you are to stimulants and what time you train.

With caffeine: the Metapure Pre-Workout Overdrive in powder, plus the shots (Kick Pre Workout, Guarana Kick, Guarana Extreme Voltage and Elite N.0.+) rely on caffeine and guarana, which contribute to reducing the feeling of fatigue and to supporting alertness and concentration. This is the kick option, ideal for heavy, explosive daytime sessions.

Without caffeine: the Pre Workout Pump RX (red-fruits flavour) is our powder formulated without caffeine. You get the pump and energy ingredients (beta-alanine, arginine, creatine) with no stimulant, which is perfect if you train in the evening or if you are sensitive to caffeine (palpitations, disrupted sleep, jitters). AAKG 100 (arginine on its own) is also stimulant-free.

The simple rule: if you want an intense boost during the day, go for a caffeinated formula like the Overdrive or a shot. For a late workout or if stimulants do not suit you, choose the caffeine-free Pump RX. You can also alternate between the two depending on the session.

The key ingredients in a good pre-workout

Not all boosters are equal: it is the formula that makes the difference. Here are the active ingredients worth knowing and what each one does:

  • Caffeine / guarana: support alertness and concentration and help reduce the feeling of fatigue
  • Citrulline and arginine (AAKG): nitric oxide precursors, prized for the pump and blood flow to the muscle
  • Beta-alanine: helps buffer muscle acidity; it can cause mild tingling on the skin, which is temporary and harmless
  • Creatine: a performance classic, included in powder form in the Pump RX (2 g per dose)
  • Fast carbs (in the Energel gel): direct fuel for longer efforts

At QNT, you can target your specific need:

  • Pump, creatine and energy in powder, caffeine-free: Pre Workout Pump RX
  • Caffeinated energy in powder: Metapure Pre-Workout (Overdrive)
  • Energy on the go, ready to drink: the Kick and Guarana shots
  • Isolated arginine to stack: AAKG 100

The smart move: read the list of active ingredients and their dosages rather than going by the colour or the advertised flavour.

When and how to take your pre-workout?

Timing accounts for a big part of how well it works. For a powder, take your pre-workout 30 to 45 minutes before your session, so the ingredients have time to kick in. A shot (Kick, Guarana) acts faster and is happily taken 15 to 20 minutes before. The Energel Quick Boost gel is best taken right before or during your effort for an immediate carb hit.

A few practical rules:

  • Avoid a completely empty stomach: a small snack limits any digestive discomfort
  • Stay well hydrated: drink water before and during the session
  • No caffeine too late: to protect your sleep, steer clear of caffeinated formulas late in the day (and switch to the caffeine-free Pump RX)
  • Start with half a dose if you are new to a powder, to gauge your tolerance

For powder, mix the recommended dose in water (for example one scoop in 250 to 300 ml) and sip it gradually as you head into your warm-up. Simple and effective.

Caffeine, tolerance and sensible use

Caffeine is remarkably effective, but the body gets used to it quickly. If you take a caffeinated booster at every session, you may feel its effect fade over the weeks.

A few markers for using it wisely:

  • Save your caffeinated pre-workout for the sessions that really matter rather than every workout
  • Alternate with a caffeine-free option (Pre Workout Pump RX) on your lighter or later sessions
  • Keep an eye on your total intake: coffee, tea and energy drinks all add up on top of your booster
  • Listen to your body: palpitations, jitters or disrupted sleep are the signal to lower the dose or switch to caffeine-free

This approach lets you keep that kick intact for when you need it, while protecting your sleep and your nervous system. A pre-workout is an occasional tool, not a daily crutch.

Whey, L-Carnitine or pre-workout: what to take before training?

People often ask us whether they can use a whey as a pre-workout, or combine a pre-workout with L-Carnitine. Here is how to make sense of it, because these are different tools:

  • The pre-workout targets energy, focus and the pump right before your effort. It is the product dedicated to in-the-moment performance.
  • Whey protein supplies protein: useful before or after the session to support muscle mass, but it is not an energy booster. You will find it in our protein collection.
  • L-Carnitine is often paired with training and with leaner-physique goals; it is taken before the session and lives in our dedicated collection.

The Guarana shots and the Energel gel are our handiest formats when you want an express boost with no prep. For a complete energy, pump and creatine mix in powder, with no stimulant, the Pre Workout Pump RX is the safe bet; if you want the caffeinated powder version, that is the Overdrive.

In short: pre-workout for energy, whey for protein, L-Carnitine for support around your effort. You can combine them depending on your goal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your health and results are our top priority. This FAQ answers the essential questions about QNT products, so you know exactly what you’re buying and how they support your goals.

Is pre-workout dangerous or does it have side effects?

Taken at the recommended dose, a pre-workout is not dangerous for a healthy person. The most common effects come from caffeine (jitters, palpitations, disrupted sleep if you take it too late). If you are sensitive or train late, pick a caffeine-free formula like the Pump RX.

Does pre-workout make you lose weight?

No, a pre-workout is not a slimming product: it is there to give you energy and focus before training, not to make you lose weight. Your training and your diet are what make the difference. For a leaner-physique goal, look instead at our fat burners or L-Carnitine.

Why does my pre-workout give me a tingling sensation on my skin?

That tingling comes from beta-alanine, an active found in several formulas. The sensation is temporary and harmless, and it usually fades on its own within 20 to 30 minutes. If it bothers you, take a smaller dose or split it across the day.

Can you take a pre-workout on an empty stomach, for example before morning cardio?

Yes, you can, but a completely empty stomach can amplify the effect of caffeine and cause mild digestive discomfort. A light snack before your session limits that risk. For morning cardio, a shot or a gel often sits better than a large dose of powder.
